The most comprehensive list of genres of music available on the Internet

Music comes in many different types and styles ranging from traditional rock music to world pop, easy listening and bluegrass. Many genres have a rich history or geographical significance, a cult following or music roots that go far beyond the 20th century.

What is a music genre?

The Music Genres List site covers many of the most popular styles of music, the site is becoming the definitive list of music genres on the Internet – thanks to you – and if you feel any music genres are missing (we’re sure there are many!) please send an email to add @ musicgenreslist dot com and we’ll add to get closer to completing the music list of genres.

list of music genres - Music is LifeAnd a big thank you to the folks who have already sent in suggestions. We haven’t added them all as some are not easily verified or differentiated from our current list (and we get many music genres suggestions that are duplicates), however all the genres we can research and confirm as valid or derivatives of existing genres or music types, we’ve added those contributors to our list of Music Genres Contributors with massive thanks.

Keep them coming! Take me to the list of music genres below!

It takes a lot to keep this current & updated… if this list is of value to you, you can use in studies, or in your business… but please provide credit and a link back and please consider buying me a cup of tea! Cheers

Of course it is way too long for those of you who pretty much limit your listening experience to what is played on the radio. However, a list of such proportions does serve a useful function for some of us.

“They play both kinds of music here: Country, and Western.”

Missing several very popular styles of music under Latin Category, all of these have become popular throughout the region, some of them exported and heard in concerts in Europe and Asia:
– Vallenato (from Colombia)
– Joropo: (this is the most popular style in Venezuela, and also in the llanos (plains) of Colombia
– Danzón: (from Cuba)
– Mambo: (from Cuba, it also represents the origins of salsa music
– Merengue: a dancing style originating in the Dom Republic but exported all over the world. More popular than Bachata (already in your list)

Here are some you missed: Psy-trance, Goa, Prog. (Trance), Prog. Psy-trance), Dark Psy, Acid-Trance, Acid-House, Deep-House, Tech-House, Minimal Techno.
Maybe classified as sub-genres, but different enough if what you have up already is anything to go by…
I’ll try to think of more in other genres another time, if you like.
Hope it helps! 🙂

You should also add Muzak, elevator music (which people say is different than Muzak and I think so too to an extent), new jack swing, and third wave ska. And yodeling, if it is considered a music genre. I don’t think you have any of these, at least that I could see.

What is boogy woogy music called?

• admin
October 17, 2016

“Boogie-woogie is a musical genre that became popular during the late 1920s, but developed in African American communities in the 1870s. It was eventually extended from piano, to piano duo and trio, guitar, big band, country and western music, and gospel.”

I love rap.. I am a rapper

• Alec Garner
July 17, 2018

I hate rap, i dont understand how people who dont play instrument’s consider them selfs artists? They could be called performer’s. I appreciate any music who actually uses instuments. Instead of sitting and plaing with a computer. No rap artist will ever reach the height oh zeppelin or the Beatles. Elvis or even MJ, pink Floyd, the stones. Never, bevause there lack of real talent. Most don’t even write their own music.

• Roxanne
October 1, 2018

Why are you being such a downer? Plus you’re just mad because you enjoy living in the past than enjoying the moment.

• Jon T.
May 29, 2019

I dunno, I have a general distaste for rap myself. Repeated rhythms of hi-hats and maybe a little bass part with mumbling over it isn’t music as far as I’m concerned.

On the ‘you’re just not enjoying the moment’ remark, I have a concern. Rap in-and-of itself just isn’t music to some people. That’s not a case of ‘old gatekeeper doesn’t like new things’, but more a case of ‘new things are trying to call themselves something they aren’t, and some people aren’t going to recognise it as what it says it is’. Rap, to some, just isn’t music. As an orchestral, jazz, and marching/DCI band musician myself, rap just seems so primitive and unfulfilling. Of course, there are some exceptions; a few certain rap songs (emphasis on ‘songs’), I don’t mind. Some are better-made than the rest. As for the rest, I just really don’t understand its appeal to anyone with an actual interest or basic knowledge of music, and personally don’t consider rap as music because of that.

Anyways. Big point there was that I agree with Alec to an extent; that rap isn’t music. I won’t say it isn’t art; art is far too diverse and frankly anything can be called ‘art’. I don’t believe that any noise can be called ‘music’ though, hence why I don’t like rap, which simply lacks substance.

• Aun Collective
April 5, 2022

If you remove the vocals from a rap song, does it still cease to be music? That would seemingly put Blockhead, Mixmaster Mike, and many other talented artists under the “not music” banner.

There’s a lot of experimental, avant-garde, sound experimentation, music concrete, etc works I’d be more apt to call not music long before the bulk of what’s under the rap. Rap is also such a catchall phrase that it loses meaning. The work of Subtle and Aesop Rock often shares more in common with outside genres than the most basic of mainsream rap that was contemporary to any of their albums.

Throwing “Rap” into not music would even catch a few Tom Waits songs, not counting the spoken word stuff (i.e. the tracks with Burroughs on The Black Rider).

What’s the definition of music that encapsulates it’s broad range in such a way as to be exclusionary to rap? I’m curious, not necessarily criticizing the point-of-view.

Just because some people have ghost writers doesn’t mean all of them to do. also, Do you consider poems art? because of rap is just faster musical rap

• Lily Drimm
October 5, 2018

So a singer isn’t an artist? A rapper isn’t as well while they write theirnown lyrics that can really be peotry sometime and you’re saying rap isn’t art?

• Lily Drimm
October 5, 2018

So a singer isn’t an artist? A rapper isn’t as well while they write theirnown lyrics that can really be peotry sometime and you’re saying rap isn’t art?
I can name you many rappers that are really talentuous, write their own lyrics, compose, even some I know had create their own beats ^^
And there is a hip-hop/rap/pop group right now that kill the charts, records and even went on UN to do a speach…
Rappers can be genius as well.

October 6, 2018

IoI it does sometimes seem that way, but it’s amazing how they can do it so fast with that type of flow, a lot, sadly really aren’t good, just sometimes saying a couple of words and making up stupid words just for the rhyme is eye-rolling-ly nauseating,
but, ones with a flow and a meaning in it, not just saying money one-hundred-eighty-times in a row, are spectacular,

In my opinion, a singer who only sings others music, doesn’t play any instrument and doesn’t write , is worst.

• Cole
October 7, 2018

If an individual can take a computer and use it to create a beat or a tune through programs, that computer definitely then becomes an instrument of sorts. Also, I really doubt any rapper is trying to reach the same pinnacle that The Beatles or Led Zepplin achieved. That’s not their style of music so they’re climbing a different mountain to reach other heights away from people like you that hate something that’s different and doesn’t suit their tastes. I’m personally a huge fan of The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Tupac & Kendrick because the talent they produced/produce is obvious, even thought extremely different.

Alec Garner, it’s absurd to say you hate Rap for the reason you mentioned above. The days of analog music are gone. It’s digital age and computer age, no one can change that. With all due respect to all the great artists you mentioned as greatest heights in music. But I’ve to tell you their songs were great then, not now that music has overgrown and magnified. It’s now music of today and tomorrows, not music of the past and yesteryears!

• Karen Culpepper
November 9, 2018

The music of yesteryear is music that stands the test of time. Todays artists are just splashes in the pan. 5 yrs from now will anyone remember the “artists” of today. Naturally there arena few who
Id love to see record labels pick artists who stand the test of time. NOT the ones who may make it to the end of a season..

November 13, 2018

Actually its technology that holds the spot that creative artists used to hold back in the day. Younger generation is more interested in the newest iphone comming out and best gamming to play. That is where it has changed. Rock is not dead. Just the buisiness is….At this present time in our world.

• Dave
March 22, 2019

How can you possibly justify saying it’s “absurd” for *HIM* to hate rap for the reasons *HE* mentioned. That’s completely rediculous! He can hate rap for any reason he wants– that doesn’t mean you have to.

• Darwin Bell
November 7, 2018

@Alex Garner. You should really rethink your statement. I personally don’t like Rap Music as well as several other genres. But to say that someone who doesn’t play an instrument isn’t an artist is absurd. Try sitting down and listening to some of the modern-day Accapella bands such as Home Free and Pentatonix. The only instruments they use is their voices and bodies but you would bet money they have a band backing them, buI they don’t. If you take the time to listen to these guys and you still don’t think that they are artist then maybe you need to open your mind and accept the fact that everyone has different views and taste. If you don’t you are missing a whole wide, beautiful world out there.

• Mark Bajona

Because it’s so much that go into writing a rap, like rhythmic patterns, rhyme schemes, metaphors, similes, punch lines, melodies, etc. Then you have to artisticly craft a way to deliver it over a beat and then it’s the level of the performance. This is poetry, song writing, performance taken to the next level, Art.

January 2, 2019

Alec, that is too bad that you “Hate Rap” and while everyone has different ear taste buds and is entitled to their opinion…my opinon of your opinion is very stuck in your era…pretty close minded for someone who seems know everything about artistry There is not one single form of expression through an external medium that is not art. I am a lyricist, rapper, singer, producer and composer and performer in countless genres… I cant read or write sheet music, play the yet composed classical sonatas and choruses by ear, sang on and wrote for jazz, gospel, Metal, pop, r&b and even show tunes and nursery rhymes. hm… lets see what the Websters say: Definition of music. 1a : the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity. b : vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony choral music piano music recorded music.

• David
January 5, 2019

There are not only rappers outside, who are only rapping over music, other people did for them. For example, I tried rap and I did my own beats. That’s cool, because you can make the music, that it fits perfect, Alec.

• Dave
March 22, 2019

Correct. Rappers can be “artists”. I think he meant to say that rappers aren’t musicians- which they certainly aren’t. Being able to snap together beats on an iPad or PC doesn’t make you a musician.

Did you know that when you “create beats”, every single sample in the library you’re choosing from is a sound that was recorded in a studio by an actual musician playing an actual instrument? Those recordings are then put in a library for you to use to “create beats”.

There’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing of course, and it can be wonderful poetry or artistry, but taking snippets of the recordings of *other people* (who actually know how to play instruments) and dragging and dropping them into a DAW does not make you a musician.

I think that’s all he was getting at.

Rap music is a form or poetry. Where people express their hardship of life through word expressions. The same how poets express themselves, so is the same with rappers. Now if you said you hate new age rappers, I’ll understand. Because they sing pure nonsense. All the do is talk about how much they abuse women, being harm to each other and their unwise use of their income. Also if you hate poetry then rap music is not for you.

I love all genre of music, because you can feel the story the artist is trying to potray. Don’t just listen to the beat, live in the lyrics. Feel the music.

I would consider rappers “artists”, but only in the sense that they can be great poets/writers. But they certainly aren’t “musicians” by any stretch of the imagination.

• Lila Gemstone
May 3, 2019

I have to disagree with you on that because a lot of rappers do write their own lyrics and they write their lyrics based on real life not made up stuff that they have no idea about so yeah you can say they’re not artists but you’re just a hypocrite they are artists in a way that most singers and songwriters are not they actually experience a lot of what they put into their music.

Alec my man, you are ILL-informed about Rap. How are going to compare your well worn, over-rated drek–yes I said drek–with rap/hip hop? It’s like comparing cars to sailboats or trains or bicycles. The bands you mentioned ought only to compare with their peers making Queen better than zeppelin, the Kinks or the Zombies or hell how about anything John Pantry(the Factory)had his hands in, better than the beatles. Let’s see..not touching the (un)disputed Kings of Pop just because off the top of my head, I can’t think of anyone but I am partial to Bolan though he’s not that comparable. Okay I’ll give you Floyd but have you heard a song called Moon People by a band called Easily Embarrassed(not a peer of Floyds but is a trippy jam) .Stuff that’s as good as Floyd is Man(welsh), East of Eden, July, & stuff you hear on Rubbles/Circus Days compilations. As for the stones, The Pretty Things, Q65 & stuff you’ll hear on Pebbles/Highs in the Mid-60’s comps.got them beat.

I don’t know how you can say rappers lack real talent. That is so far from the truth. Oh and by the way-how many of your precious bands regularly utilized session musicians? Quite a few–okay let’s not get into the Jimmy page played the guitar solo for “You really got me” by the kinks-that is simply not the case, Page banged a mean tamborine for that song though.

I think your beef is really with Electronica. Rap has been given a bad one because of Gangsta Rap and the violence it parades. There is great rap out there where lots of rappers also write & produce their own songs. The fact is that rap/hip hop rose up out of a jaded & dying music scene(r&r) and reinvented music itself by implementing samples, record scratching, and upping the ante lyrically. The unity that true hip hop has encouraged by stepping up their game with each other on their next track or performance is incredibly refreshing. And you will never find lyrics as good as what I’ve heard in some rap. For example Killah Priest’s “Color of Ideas’ and “Quantum Spirit of Creation” are simply beautiful and deep. Hip hop has proven itself to be imaginative & resourceful whereas classic rock can be an elitist circle-jerk. Just sayin..

“That spoon, that spoon, that spooonful…” as only Q65 could do

I’m sorry Alec Garner that you hate rap as a whole. There are soooo many different variations of rap like sub-rap genres (just like i.e. Electronic music or Classical). I’m also sorry no one has ever introduced you to some of the good rap artists out there 😔. I recommend J.Cole personally, since he has written, recorded & produced his own music, and makes his own beats. That’s just ONE of many. There’s gangsta rap, mumble rap, trap, west coast/east coast, just to name a few sub genres of rap. Dive in deeper and I bet you’ll find at least ONE song that you like, relate to even! Oh & there’s Christian rap, for those who are on the religious and/or spiritual side and like rap art that preaches to ya! There’s really something for everyone in every genre. So I say to you, and others reading this, go dabble in music!! Checkout Zydeco, learn something new, find out what part of the world it originates, how is it composed. There’s a whole wide world of an array of music genres. It’s art, for your ears and emotions. With love & light, “hashtag” music is life (when JT is on SNL 😂)

Rap, regardless of the style, is artistic expression whether you like it or not (I don’t, generally). If rap includes music accompaniment, whether it’s original scoring, sampling or a mix, then it belongs on the list.

I think house should be added to the list , as a genre on its own , because it has other sub-genres ,

The sub genres should be:

Funk House / Radio

This is like electronica with a dull gospel background.

Ghetto house

This is like rap and electronica

Ghost house

This is like Ghost themed sounds with electronica

House

This is the normal sub genres of electronic

Jazz house

Spooky house

This is like electronica with a soul background.

Spooky funk House

This is electrica with soul and gospel background ( e.g Sia bring it to me)

Spooky rock house

Electronica with soul and pop or rock ( e.g Katy Perry , Ur so gay)

Fun house

Like electronica and children’s song ( e.g pink funhouse)

Electro house

I think this list is more than wrong. And it’s quite wrong to put it at all, because this is spreading false information. For example, you are listing “christmas” as if it was an own genre — but infact a genre is not defined by the meaning of a tune. There are many Christmas songs that definitely and officially belong to the pop-genre for example. According to your list they make up an own genre..? And you are listing subgenres of Rock under another classification….? How does that make sense? I mean — you can “filter” genres — but not in the same breath as you are categorising them. It’s like making a list of mammals and all it’s species and amonst all the species and their subspecies, you start listing all animals that can swim. You wouldn’t do that either, would you? Please either correct this article or delete it.

• Anthony

Yeah, what you said 😜

• Dave
March 22, 2019

If you’re saying that “Christmas Music” isn’t a genre of music, you’re being really, really silly (and you’re wrong of course)! Just because a song fits into more than one genre, doesn’t mean those other genres don’t exist! Do you think that “punk rock”, “hard rock”, “soft rock”, “classic rock”, “heavy metal”, “death metal”, “christian rock” and “acoustic rock” should all just be called “rock” (even though they are VASTLY different)?? And if so, what’s the point of genres in the first place?

By your standards, couldn’t we just classify every single song of any type (rap, classical, punk, country, techno, broadway, disco, etc) that’s EVER been played on the radio as “pop” (which of course simply means “popular”)?? It’s on the radio, so I guess it’s *ALL* just “pop”, right? Every single song no matter what it sounds like? That’s pretty silly, isn’t it?

By the way, you may be a millenial and not understand this, but not everything that YOU don’t like or agree with needs to be “corrected”. And not everything that YOU don’t like or agree with needs to be “deleted” from the world.

With all due respect, please get a grip!

I personally like the list if no other reason, having a reasonable way to categorize my extensive LP collection with dividers. I plan to make a divider called “Holidays” so all those albums are together and not randomly spread out to the other classifications which would make them much more difficult to find.

Great effort was obviously put into this, I thank the author. Now I’m hoping to find a list that has a link to an example of each kind because I need to hear it to understand it.

Pop rap (or hip pop) is a pop music influenced style of hip hop that contains pop-influenced melodic hooks and pop influenced melodies. The style became popular in the early 1990s, as hip hop music found commercial success. Pop rappers such as Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were more radio-friendly than the explicit lyrics of gangsta rap such as Ice-T.

Hip hop is a cultural movement that originated in the working class communities of New York City, United States, in the late 1970s.[1][2][2] DJ Afrika Bambaataa first outlined the five pillars of hip-hop culture: MCing, DJing, breaking, graffiti writing, and knowledge.[3][4][5][6] Other elements include beatboxing, hip hop fashion, and slang. Since first emerging in the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread around the world.[7] When hip hop music began to emerge, it was based around disc jockeys who created rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, which is now more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by “rap” (a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry more formally in 16 bar measures or time frames) and beatboxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of hip hop DJs. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among lovers of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.

A minor quibble: Baroque music is different from classical music. Baroque music should hence not be a subcategory of classical because baroque dates back to 17th century, when pianos aren’t invented yet and harpsichords are used instead, which explains why most baroque music have detached notes (e.g. Bach, Handel). Classical, on the other hand, has rich harmonies and a lot of scale-like notes. Classical dates back to 18th century (e.g. Mozart, Beethoven)
Hope this helps.

Dear sir
I think you overlooked some music types which are very ancient and very comprehensive, with their own melody and language. You only mentioned Ethio-jazz, which is a very small part of the types in that country. There are more than 11 styles which are unique and some inherent. I am doing a research on identifying and classifying those styles from the rest of the international music. So far I got successful result on identifying and classifying most of them. Let me give you the lists first. If you require I can give you sample songs with description of the style and other information. These styles use a pentatonic scale which is different form the diatonic scale that almost the whole world is using.
I believe they need to be included in the list. Some of them existed since the 3rd century as religion songs.
Amharic
Tizita /Waltz in pentatonic scale
Anchihoye
Bati
Ambasel
Oromigna
Guragigna
Tigrigna
Afarigna
Somaligna (Not the country Somalia song)
Ethiopian Orthodox church songs styles
Ezel
Ararat
mem
… and more

Please contact me if you need any explanation and resource about the styles.

Under your country genre I see you have Country Gospel. That is great however the correct name should be Inspirational Country, which includes Country Gospel. The Radio Station I worked at was Inspirational Country, which includes Artsit like George Strait, Josh Turner, Clay Walker, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Reba, ECT and only there songs that are inspirational but also many many Independent Artist like Jenna Faith, Johnny Rowlett, Chris Hale, Chuck Day, Lisa Daggs ECT . Other Radio Stations like Heavens Country in Colorado, Camp meeting Radio in Knoxville, HLE Radio in Jennings Lousiana, not to mention KVVO 94.1 Inspirational Country Radio in Abilene Texas as well as tons of others are known as Inspirational Country Radio Stations. The Inspirational Country/ Gospel Is taking off in a major way and has been the last several years especially. Sunday’s Kind of Country Radio and Tv also are known for this out of Tenn.
Country Gospel is great but the true name for it Inspirational Country Music. Its country music with a message, FAITH, FAMILY, COUNTRY whether that be an artist singing about the love of his wife or girlfriend to an artist singing about restoring a mustang ect. It all falls under Inspirational Country which includes the Country Gospel. It’s been around for years but has become well known in the Country Radio world from Nashville to Texas, to NY even over seas were people listen on line through there sites or Facebook live right from the studios, even the Artist do live Facebook stuff all the time. Just some FYI for ya. I will include one of the radio website for you in the field below. The main man there is Hunter a friend, check It out

I wonder how carnatic music is just a sub genre in world music. One of the most complicated of all music is Carnatic music and the other one Hindustani, both Indian classical music. Indian classical music and indian popular music themselves make a genre. Its rich melody puffed with rich harmony and accompaniment. Some indian popular movie songs are so rich that they can be converted to a symphony. Unfortunately the world shows an attitude to india always which is seen in the case of music as well.

Kasékò (kaseko in Suriname) is a musical genre from French Guiana and after imported in Surinam, a fusion of African, European and American styles. The Guianan Creole term Kasékò translates literally in casser le corps (break the body) of the French expression, which was used during slavery to indicate a swift dance. It is rhythmically complex, with percussion instruments including skratji (a very large bass drum) and snare drums, as well as saxophone, trumpet and occasionally trombone. Singing can be both solo and choir. Songs are typically call-and-response, as are Creole folk styles from the area, such as kawina.

Kaseko first evolved out of Bigi Pokoe, which was a 1930s’ style played by large brass bands during festivals, strongly influenced by Dixieland jazz. Later, calypso, rock and roll and other styles left an influence.

Hi! I think inside electronic music you are missing a lot of them. First of all I would put dance music inside electronic music. And I don’t consider any of the genres you have inside Dance as Dance music subgenres. I think Dance is a style on itself so probably would put everything as subgenres of electronic music.
I would also add
Progressive
Tech-Trance

Carrie Underwood is my favourite country singer. She is young, beautiful and charming woman in her 30s. Her strong voice takes me away from all problems of this world so I can enjoy my life and listen songs created by her voice. Now the singer is on a Cry Pretty 360 Tour started in May of 2019. The concerts scheduled for the whole 2019, up to the last day of October. Ticket prices are moderate and available for all men and women with different income. If you are a country music lover as me, then you must visit at least one of her concert. All tour dates are available at the Carrie Underwood tour Hershey. Open the website and make yourself familiar with all Carrie Underwood concerts in 2019!

You people from the U.S. are so funny, you only count north american and european music, what about brazilian Samba or Bossa, or uruguayan Candombe, or Chilean Cueca, or Argentinian Tango, Peruvian Festejo and so on…. even Africa itself, every country has got hundreds of different rythms, styles, genres or whatever you wanna call it, if you wanna organize music styles or genres or rythms, do it by country, and you’ll never end…..its like trying to find every single popular dish in the world….

Amazing…Thanks for sharing..I really Didn’t know there were so many genres of music. I love Hip Hop rapping. Hip-hop or rap music is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s. Pop rappers such as Drake and Ice are one of my favorites rappers.

Please spend some time with hip hop history. Crunk is not an electronic genre, it’s a subgenre of hip hop that uses synths. Trap is also not an electronic genre, nor is it a subgenre of electro, but a southern subgenre of hip hop. The electronic version of “trap” uses the same name, but would be better characterized as “Trap (EDM)” or “Electronic Trap.” The electronic form of trap rose to prominence as electronic producers in America started incorporating elements of southern Trap (rap) music and modern dubstep into their own production, eventually going so far as to feature rappers on their tracks.

Splittercore and Extratone! These both fall under Speedcore music. The core idea of both is to ramp up the already breakneck speeds of some Speedcore music (300 BPM+) and to push the boundaries of recognizing it all together. Splittercore pushes the BPM up to 600+ while Extratone pushes it all the way to a staggering 1000+. Cant wait for you to see this!

Great list – I think it’s never ending as it’s always changing and styles are always being added. I like how you’ve grouped them into the major genres then put into sub-groups.
Agree with the South-American styles, but you could add even more from other countries too. Eg: Australia – Indigenous (Aboriginal), Australian country, pub rock (Australian).
Reading some of the negatives but I think having a list is awesome regardless. You can always improve but hey, starting somewhere!!

Sick list, a very fun read! I am fascinated by genre in music, so i will visit and peruse this list with fair regularity. Plus it’s a killer page to show musos who claim to not know what genre their music is…. “Stop being pretentious, you’re not that bloody original, now sit here and choose three maximum!” (Ahem!)

Anyways i have a few suggestions…

Footwork, those badboy Chicago breaks a la DJ Rashad. Where it comes since its kinda house derived but breakbeat-based and at 160 bpm…

Chopped & Screwed — does it count as a sort-of genre, or just a style of DJing? After all nobody raps in slomo exactly but the Houston originals rapped knowing they would be slowed down, so…?

Vaporwave – possibly not a real genre, buit a weirdly specific ambient scenelet.

Soca – definitely a real genre! As heard at carnival the world over, you were just too distracted by them gals…

Under UK Garage, how about UK Funky/Funky House?

And finally, under Hardstyle as subgenres, how about Gabber, Frenchcore and Donk? (Put a donk on it!)

Peace!

• James
August 7, 2019

This is completely bloody ludicrous. I see there is a genre called ‘Cowpunk’ – why not ‘Sheeppunk’ or ‘Gerbilpunk’. And what the hell is ‘Outlaw Country’ – is that country music that’s so crap it’s been banned from being broadcast?
I’m sure most musicians and producers like me despise all this nonsense.

Could you take African music out of world music category, for the same reasons you have classed Latin music seperatly?

There is enough listeners (both from within and outside the diaspora) to have crossed into it being…just music.
eg: Beyonce Gift, Ciara, Chris Brown, Drake collaborations etc
Afro centred Festivals and club nights all over Europe attended by increasingly mainstream audiences
French footballers celebrating goals with Afrobeats & US basketball players too
prominant Afrobeats artists featuring on mainstream US shows (Burna Boy on Jimmy Kimmel)

Lastly the hybrid fusions of African music into other genres (like Latin Chicana culture into mainstream)
eg Afro swing genre, Justin Bieber – Sorry, Ed Sheeran – I Don’t Care

Prominant chart postions of Afrobeat songs or styled songs like Danza Kuduro and Oliver Twist

……its about time.

• Static
September 25, 2019

You probably need more detail. If the person who published this list still checks on it, then you may want to tell them that Hardbass would fall under Hardcore Elctronica, or whatever this list has that fits similarly. It may also be important to note it’s Russian origins which may put it in some other categories. Notable Hardbass artists can be found with a quick search of the genre name, and it’s pretty smooth sailing from there.

Good list, I appreciate your time to research and publish. One genre I didn’t see listed under Rap was screwed rap. The sound of slowed down tracks and strategically placed breaks and repeats in the track originally came from Houston, TX. It was popularized by a local musician, DJ Screw who coined the name of the style of music and it blew up in the South. Many artists followed and the style quickly gained popularity all over. So many people loved the style that they began taking their favorite music from other genres’ and “screwing” the tracks with editing software, many of which are available to listen to on youtube.

Interesting how you managed to side-step perhaps one of the most important categories of music: Protest Songs which, of course, can fit into any number of other categories, depending on whose singing it and what kind of beat is behind the vocalist.

Also of interest is how protest songs have been around for at least 200 years (and probably much longer if we were to really dig deeper), and yet no mention in your list.

And you missed a few others, as well.
“Speed Garage” (which is one of my favourites)
“Chill-Billy” (okay, I just made that one up)
“Funkabilly”

Actually, there are also more ‘electronica’ types:
“Hipnotronic”
“Funktronic”
“Boomnotronic”

“Funkadelic” which is both the name of a band and a style/genre

You folks should really get out, more.

Im not sure what the genre is called or if it would even be considered a genre but I think it should be a separate genre, its like indie, pop, and lo-fi combined. some examples of songs in this “genre” would be, “Televisions” by Current Joys, “Laputa” by Panchiko, “In Your Arms” by Sunbeam Sound Machine, and “Pope Is a Rockstar” by SALES.

Sorry if this is already a genre that I just don’t know about and Im just wasting your time. Also if this does become a genre for the list please don’t put my name next to it, I would like to stay anonymous.

There is a form of folk music in Asia in which two instruments duet together with a light counterpoint between their 2 parts. One follows the other. I am racking my brain trying to remember the name of the form or genre. Please let me know if you know. My email is cynthesizer801@gmail.com

Thank You in advance for answering my question.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought there were only 3 genres of Reggae – Mento, Ska and Rocksteady and within those different styles e.g. Ska > Two-Tone, Mento – Calypso from Trinidad and Tobago etc

Interested on peoples views….

Hi, you’re missing some genres such as Zeuhl = bands such as Magma, et al. Wiki lists it as a sub-genre of Progressive Rock. 🙂

dunno if its there and im blind, but please add “outsider” music. i would listen to “true love will find you in the end” by david johnston. it’s basically imperfect music. it’s like people who make music just for the sake of having fun. the idea is really inspirational. although i dont enjoy the songs, (besides true love will find you in the end) they have a deep history. for example, a band named “the shaggs” were forced to form because of some “prophecy” this dad saw. they never took lessons for anything, but for some reason they are actually pretty good at songwriting.

Thank you for the great list.

One thing though. In my opinion, “flamenco” should not be included in Latin Genre. Flamenco comes from the gypsy people of Spain. It is not rooted in what makes Latin music distinctive: namely the combination of African, Indigenous and Spanish influence. It should be a world music category and then have sub categories such as rumba flamenca, new age flamenco instrumental, sevillanas ect.

Seem to be missing: CORSICAN POLYPHONICS
ie. A Filetta, Vox Bigerri, Donnisulana, Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corses, etc

What would be great (although complicated to implement) is to give a few top names/bands for each genre.

You may not be aware, but there are thousands of listeners you are missing, the entire east coast has a genre of music called “Beach Music” you may have heard the song by Jackie Gore called “I love Beach Music” was made into a commercial that sang as “I love Budweiser” but Beach music is not a fad and has been around longer than rap. It is not recognized as a Genre on any music station. I think it’s time “Beach Music” gets recognized. There is also an Beach Music award ceremony every Year at the “Alabama theater” in Myrtle Beach call “The Carolina Beach Music Awards” or “CBMA” If you search the web you will find many station who play “Carolina Beach Music” check out soundofthestrand.com or 94.9 the Surf and many others but don’t search for beach music as it’s not there. Beach music consist of “Oldies & R&B with a dance beat. Sometimes called “Shag Music” as Shagging is the Dance. Search YouTube for “Carolina Shag” if you want to see the dance. Please consider adding “Beach Music to your Genre.

Added it as a sub-genre of R&B, although it doesn’t fit *exactly* under there, I think it’s the best ‘parent’ genre for it. LMK if you have any insight into where else it may fit. Cheers

I’m hoping you may be able to help me or point me in the right direction.

I hope you can help, and would be very grateful if you could.

I only just put up a page with artwork for first album.

Great list. I was talking with some Greek people about their genres of music, laiko, entechno, rebetika and decided to look up the list. I know including genres like these might be too many though. You should however include Balinese and Indonesian gamelan music.

My friend who’s a music snob wants to know if this site is legit or not. Pls help.

• admin
August 14, 2022

Well, I’m legit 🙂

I’m not a music snob, but I do have an interest in building a definitive list helped by hundreds of folks who have contributed.

Welcome your friend to be a contributor or help edit the list. It’s a part-time endeavor for me, so the more help the merrier.

And yes… to answer the question more fully. Each of these genres has been submitted by users, or exists within various authoritative databases, and have been verified or validated before posting as music genres that have more than one reference point on the web.

I’m not an expert though, marketing guy with some interest in 70’s and 80’s music who did some marketing work for Napster, which is where this all started!

Cheers

How long did this take to write??? And why are there so many types of dance?????

• admin
August 14, 2022

A long time 🙂
It’s a crowd-sourced project… although ‘dance’ may have some core root genres, many contributors have offered sub-genres that have expanded the dance category.

Hi, this one’s new but you should add hyperpop to the list…it could be under pop or electronic — perhaps if you feel like it, you should look into genres like it – it’s all become quite a thing over the last few years it feels like and it would be good to include 🙂
